South African Airlines to reopen direct flight route from Bangkok to Johannesburg
South African Airlines plans to resume direct flights from Bangkok to Johannesburg within the next two years, as revealed by Thailand's Trade Representative Nalinee Taveesin after discussions with the South African Ambassador to Thailand, Darkey Ephraim Africa.
The two officials celebrated the increasing tourism between their nations, noting a surge in South African visitors to Thailand by over 50% in 2023, reaching 60,000, while around 2,000 Thais visited South Africa.
Additionally, the two countries are looking to enhance their partnership in various fields, including education—with the establishment of the Nelson Mandela Center for Conflict Resolution at Chulalongkorn University—as well as cooperation in industries like electric vehicles, mining, and agriculture.
They also plan to empower women in business and are exploring trade opportunities, such as reducing tariffs and forming a Free Trade Agreement with the Southern African Customs Union. South Africa has expressed support for Thailand's negotiations with SACU in these endeavors.
