Thai Commerce Minister to Travel to Washington to Address U.S. Trade Probe, Decision Expected Within Days
Suphajee prepares direct engagement with U.S. officials under Section 301 review as Thailand seeks to avert potential tariff measures
Thailand’s commerce minister Suphajee Suthumpun is set to travel to the United States in early May to directly address questions raised by the U.S. Trade Representative under a Section 301 investigation, with officials expecting a response within days of the hearing.
The visit comes at a critical stage in the U.S. review process, which is examining Thailand and several other economies over concerns related to manufacturing capacity and trade practices.
Thai authorities have taken an active and coordinated approach, forming a dedicated task force to compile evidence and present a comprehensive explanation of the country’s policies.
The United States initiated the investigation in March, targeting sectors including automobiles, machinery and rubber, and raising questions about structural supply conditions and trade imbalances.
Thailand has already submitted written clarifications and is preparing to participate in a public hearing scheduled for early May in Washington.
Following the hearing, there is a defined window of approximately seven days for additional rebuttals, during which Thai officials aim to reinforce their position and address any remaining concerns.
The accelerated timeline reflects the urgency of the process, with potential outcomes including trade measures such as tariffs if the U.S. determines that certain practices are inconsistent with its trade framework.
Suphajee has expressed confidence in Thailand’s ability to present clear and substantiated explanations, emphasising that the country maintains transparent trade policies and does not engage in practices such as currency manipulation or direct export subsidies.
Thailand’s leadership has underscored a proactive and strategic response, mobilising government agencies and trade representatives to engage closely with U.S. counterparts.
The objective is to safeguard key export sectors while preserving strong bilateral trade relations.
The outcome of the engagement is expected shortly after the hearing, with officials indicating that a decision or initial direction could emerge within a week.
The process is being closely monitored by industry participants, given the potential implications for Thai exports and global supply chains.
The upcoming discussions highlight Thailand’s active diplomacy and commitment to resolving trade issues through direct dialogue, reinforcing its position as a constructive and reliable partner in the international trading system.
