Thai Company Collaborates with Toyota and Denso to Develop Hydrogen-Powered Commercial Vehicles
Thai company Nex Point is collaborating with Toyota Tsusho and Denso, two Japanese firms, to develop hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEV) for commercial use in Thailand.
This move comes as the transport sector focuses on electric vehicles as a more climate-friendly alternative to fossil fuels, but hydrogen-powered vehicles take the clean fuel initiative a step further.
The partnership aims to analyze the feasibility of commercializing FCEV trucks in Thailand.
Nex Point's CEO, Khanist Srivajiraprabha, announced on Monday that applying hydrogen to commercial vehicles can increase their travel capacity for long distances (up to 1,000 km) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.
If the project is successful, it will expand to a larger fleet to improve hydrogen fuel supply chain infrastructure and lessen environmental impacts.
Khanist believes this project will also promote hydrogen as an alternative energy source alongside batteries.
A collaboration between Nex Point and Toyota Tsusho aims to develop fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) capable of traveling from Thailand's northernmost point to the southern tip with just one recharge.
This partnership also focuses on addressing hydrogen-related explosions.
The transition to hydrogen fuel in the transport industry faces challenges due to the limited number of hydrogen stations and high production costs.
Currently, there is only one hydrogen station operated by PTT in Chonburi province.
Despite these challenges, Nex Point CEO, Khanist, is optimistic that PTT and relevant agencies will invest in hydrogen if there is sufficient demand for the fuel.
