Thailand Addresses Labor Shortages After Cambodian Government Orders Workers Home
Measures include recruiting new migrant labor, mobilizing soldiers and inmates, and registering undocumented workers
Thailand’s Department of Employment is implementing measures to address labor shortages that followed the Cambodian government’s directive requiring Cambodian workers in Thailand to return home.
The decision has left significant gaps in key sectors reliant on foreign labor.
In response, Thai authorities are preparing to bring in migrant workers from Sri Lanka and other countries to fill immediate needs.
Additional measures include assigning enlisted soldiers, well-behaved inmates nearing release, and youths in juvenile detention centers to support industries such as manufacturing and agriculture.
The government is also advancing plans to register undocumented workers currently in Thailand.
The registration process will provide legal status, reduce illegal labor practices, and expand the available workforce more quickly.
Officials emphasized that the combined initiatives aim to stabilize labor supply, maintain production levels, and ensure that employment is regulated within a formal framework.
