Thailand to Host Mass Same-Sex Weddings in January 2025
More than 1,000 same-sex couples in Thailand will marry on January 22, 2025, following the implementation of the Marriage Equality Bill. This law, which grants same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples, marks Thailand as the first Southeast Asian nation to legalize same-sex marriage. The event will be hosted by Bangkok Pride in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
On January 22, 2025, more than 1,000 same-sex couples will marry in Thailand as the Marriage Equality Bill comes into force, 120 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette.
This makes Thailand the first nation in Southeast Asia and the 37th worldwide to legalise same-sex marriage.
'This law is a monumental step towards equal rights in Thailand,' said Waaddao Anne Chumaporn, founder of Bangkok Pride and former member of the Marriage Equality Bill committee.
Bangkok Pride, in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, aims to have 1,448 couples participate in the mass wedding, symbolizing the sections of the amended Marriage Law.
Couples residing inside and outside of Thailand are invited, and so far, 183 couples have registered.
The law grants same-sex couples the same legal rights as heterosexual couples, including adoption, asset management, and access to state welfare.
Married couples will be referred to as 'two individuals' instead of 'a man and a woman,' and 'spouses' instead of 'husband and wife'.
Jirayu Huangsab, an adviser to the prime minister, encouraged civil servants to become familiar with the new law before it takes effect.
