The Evolving Bilateral Ties Between Thailand and Australia
A 72-year relationship marked by strengthened diplomatic, economic, and security cooperation.
Thailand and Australia have maintained a strong bilateral relationship for over 72 years, since establishing diplomatic ties on December 19, 1952. The countries have seen ongoing cooperation in areas such as trade, education, security, and tourism, further solidified by high-level engagements between their leaders.In November 2022, Thailand and Australia signed the Joint Plan of Action to Implement the Thailand-Australia Strategic Partnership 2022-2025, aiming to strengthen collaboration across various sectors.
The two countries also regularly conduct joint military exercises, such as the Army’s Chapel Gold, Navy’s AUSTHAI, and Air Force's Thai Boomerang, to enhance international security.
Additionally, the Thai Immigration Bureau and Australian Department of Home Affairs signed a memorandum of cooperation to tackle transnational crimes and illegal immigration.In 2023, Australia was Thailand's ninth-largest trading partner, with a trade value of US$18.38 billion, driven by Thai exports worth $11.15 billion.
The two countries also signed the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA) in 2004, which led to tariff reductions on over 800 products.
The anniversary of this agreement will be celebrated in 2024, along with the Strategic Economic Cooperation Arrangement, which aims to bolster economic ties in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, digital economy, and green economy.Approximately 35,000 Australians live in Thailand, while around 100,000 Thai nationals reside in Australia.
Educational exchanges also play a key role in their relationship, with Thailand ranking seventh in the number of international students in Australia, accounting for approximately 15,000 students.
In 2022, Thailand welcomed 336,688 Australian tourists, while Australia received 103,840 visitors from Thailand.Australia itself is a diverse country, with a population of over 28 million and a land area of 7.68 million square kilometers.
It is home to iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and the Great Barrier Reef, which draw millions of tourists each year.
Australia Day, celebrated on January 26, marks the landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788, although it is also recognized by some as 'Invasion Day' in acknowledgment of the history of Aboriginal Australians.The evolving relationship between Thailand and Australia reflects a shared commitment to mutual cooperation across multiple dimensions, benefiting both countries in areas of trade, security, and cultural exchange.
