Unseasonal Cold Front Sweeps Across Thailand on Valentine’s Day, Bringing 16°C Lows and Widespread Rain
Thai authorities issue weather advisories as temperatures drop sharply in parts of the country, with cooler conditions and scattered rainfall expected through the weekend
A seasonal cold front moved across Thailand on Valentine’s Day, bringing an abrupt drop in temperatures to as low as 16 degrees Celsius in several northern provinces, along with scattered rain in parts of the country.
Meteorological officials reported that a moderate high-pressure system from China had extended into upper Thailand and the South China Sea, causing cooler conditions and gusty winds across the region .
In Bangkok and surrounding areas, early morning temperatures fell noticeably compared with earlier in the week, while provinces in the North and Northeast experienced the sharpest decline.
Forecasters indicated that temperatures in some mountainous areas could fall even further overnight, accompanied by light rain in select districts .
Authorities advised residents to take precautions against changing weather conditions, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and young children.
Farmers were also urged to safeguard crops against potential damage from fluctuating temperatures and rainfall.
Maritime warnings were issued for parts of the Gulf of Thailand, where stronger winds may generate higher waves during the cold spell .
The cooler conditions are expected to persist for several days before gradually easing as the high-pressure system weakens.
While February typically marks the tail end of Thailand’s cool season, meteorologists noted that such temperature swings can occur during transitional periods, particularly when influenced by continental air masses moving southward.
