Cambodia Seeks International Court Ruling as Border Skirmish Sparks Retaliation
Diplomatic and economic sanctions escalate after soldier’s death
Cambodia has petitioned the International Court of Justice to adjudicate four disputed border zones following a fatal exchange of fire on May 28, when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a contested 'no‑man’s land'.
In retaliation for tightened Thai border controls, Cambodia has banned Thai films, internet bandwidth, electricity imports, and produce.
Thailand, however, continues to reject ICJ jurisdiction and asserts that border issues should remain within the framework of bilateral mechanisms established in the 2000 memorandum of understanding.
Both sides have pledged continued dialogue, with a high‑level Joint Boundary Committee meeting set for mid‑June.
