Eni’s LNG Expansion Sparks Interest as Thailand’s Gulf Development Accelerates Import Strategy
While no confirmed contract links the two companies, Thailand’s liberalised gas market and Eni’s global LNG push set the stage for future cooperation
Reports suggesting that Eni has secured a 10-year liquefied natural gas agreement with Thailand’s Gulf Development Company have not been substantiated by any verified public disclosure.
Instead, current developments indicate two parallel but separate trajectories: Thailand’s growing appetite for diversified LNG imports and Eni’s long-term expansion of its global gas portfolio.
Thailand’s Gulf Development recently marked a milestone by bringing in the country’s first privately imported LNG cargo under market-liberalisation rules.
The shipment, sourced through an agreement with ADNOC Trading, represents a decisive step in reducing Thailand’s reliance on state-controlled procurement and bolstering national energy security.
With rising demand and structural shifts in its power sector, Thailand is actively seeking additional stable LNG supply channels.
Eni, meanwhile, has broadened its long-term LNG commitments with a new 20-year deal to purchase two million tonnes per year from US-based Venture Global.
The agreement strengthens Eni’s global supply flexibility and enhances its capacity to service markets undergoing energy transitions.
Despite its expanding LNG footprint, no statement from Eni, Gulf Development or relevant regulators indicates the existence of a bilateral 10-year supply arrangement between the two companies.
Energy-sector analysts note that Thailand’s evolving procurement landscape, combined with Eni’s increasingly diversified LNG portfolio, creates a strategic environment in which future cooperation is plausible.
As Thailand seeks reliable long-term supply partners and private-sector players gain greater participation, opportunities for new agreements may emerge.
For now, however, the claim of a formal 10-year Eni–Gulf Development contract remains unsupported by verified, up-to-date information.
