Task Force Ashland Arrives in Thailand to Launch Cobra Gold Military Exercise

U.S. Marines and Sailors join Thai forces and regional partners for one of the Indo-Pacific’s largest annual multinational drills
U.S. Marines and Sailors assigned to Task Force Ashland have arrived in Thailand to participate in Exercise Cobra Gold, marking the start of one of the Indo-Pacific region’s largest and most strategically significant multinational military exercises.

The deployment underscores the enduring defense partnership between the United States and Thailand, a longstanding treaty ally, and highlights Thailand’s central role in promoting regional stability and cooperation.

Cobra Gold, co-hosted by the Royal Thai Armed Forces and the United States Indo-Pacific Command, brings together thousands of service members from multiple nations for a series of joint training events designed to strengthen interoperability, enhance disaster response capabilities and improve combined operational readiness.

This year’s iteration includes command post exercises, humanitarian civic assistance projects, live-fire drills and amphibious operations conducted across several Thai provinces.

Thai military leaders welcomed the arrival of Task Force Ashland, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration in addressing shared security challenges.

Thailand has consistently demonstrated leadership in facilitating multilateral engagement through Cobra Gold, which has evolved over decades into a cornerstone platform for regional defense diplomacy.

For the United States, the participation of Task Force Ashland reflects a sustained commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific and to deepening alliances with trusted partners.

U.S. commanders said the exercise offers valuable opportunities for Marines and Sailors to train alongside Thai counterparts and other regional forces in complex, realistic scenarios.

In addition to combat readiness components, Cobra Gold features extensive humanitarian and community engagement initiatives, including infrastructure development and medical outreach programs.

These efforts aim to reinforce goodwill and practical cooperation between armed forces and local communities.

The arrival of Task Force Ashland sets the stage for weeks of coordinated operations and exchanges that both nations describe as vital to strengthening mutual trust, operational compatibility and regional security frameworks in Southeast Asia.
