At the Royal Elephant Kraal Village in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district, a 36-year-old elephant named Chamchuree gave birth to rare twin calves on Friday night.
The twins, one male weighing 80kg and one female weighing 60kg, are a significant addition to the Kraal’s record of 95 births in 27 years.
The father of the twins is a 29-year-old elephant named Siam.
According to the Phra Kochaban Foundation, the birth of twins of different sexes in elephants is extremely rare, possibly the first such case in the world.
Unfortunately, a mahout was injured during the delivery and required hospital treatment.
Meanwhile, in Kanchanaburi, officials have launched an operation to locate and treat a 15-year-old elephant named Soithong, who was spotted with a swollen left cheek.
