Thailand's Durian Exports Expected to Rise Amid Quality Assurance Efforts

Thailand's Durian Exports Expected to Rise Amid Quality Assurance Efforts

The Commerce Ministry anticipates a 37% increase in durian production, emphasizing strict quality controls to facilitate exports.
Thailand's durian exports are projected to reach at least 950,000 tonnes in 2025, with an estimated value exceeding 10 billion baht, according to the Commerce Ministry.

Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan announced that there are no expected issues with contamination from Basic Yellow 2 (BY2) dye in the upcoming season.

In a recent meeting with Chanthaburi Governor Monsit Paisarntanawat and representatives from both the public and private sectors, preparations for the durian harvest scheduled for May were discussed.

The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry forecasts a significant production increase of 37% year-on-year, anticipating total output to reach approximately 1.76 million tonnes.

Minister Pichai has previously engaged with Wu Zhiwu, minister-counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, highlighting the necessity of stringent inspection protocols.

He requested that China consider random inspections instead of checking every shipment, as full inspections could potentially delay exports and jeopardize the quality of the fruit.

Governor Monsit verified that measures against BY2 dye contamination in Chanthaburi and adjacent regions have been effective, with various sectors cooperating to ensure the forthcoming harvest is free from contamination.

Minister Pichai noted that no contamination cases have been reported in the past month, which could bolster confidence in Thai durian exports.

He invited Minister Zhiwu to visit Chanthaburi to observe the quality of the durians, aiming to build trust among exporters and farmers.

In addition to maintaining exports to China, the Thai government is evaluating opportunities to introduce durians to markets in the United States, the European Union, and India.

The Commerce Ministry has outlined plans to discuss Thai fruit exports, including durians, during the Indian Prime Minister's visit to Thailand in early April.

Meanwhile, the Department of Business Development (DBD) is currently investigating legal entities that potentially have Thai nominees holding shares for foreign investors in agricultural lands, particularly in Chanthaburi and Rayong provinces.

The DBD has identified 462 entities in Chanthaburi with some under examination for holding agricultural land, and initial checks in Mueang District revealed 11 entities related to farming and fruit trading.

Auramon Supthaweethum, DBD Director-General, emphasized the necessity of adhering to the 51:49 Thai-foreign shareholding requirement.

Entities exceeding this threshold could be classified as foreign and excluded from restricted sectors such as agriculture and trade, facing potential legal consequences.
