Thailand's Rainbow Economy Flourishes During Pride Month
The LGBTQIAN+ community drives significant growth in tourism, entertainment, and lifestyle sectors as Thailand celebrates Pride Month.
Thailand is tapping into the burgeoning rainbow economy, with significant growth anticipated during Pride Month in June.
The rainbow economy, encompassing sectors like tourism, entertainment, and lifestyle, is experiencing rapid expansion, notably driven by the global LGBTQIAN+ community, which comprises an estimated 400 to 800 million individuals, equating to approximately 5–10% of the world population.
The LGBTQ+ travel market is projected to attain a value of about US$357 billion (11.71 trillion baht) by 2025, with forecasts indicating that it could further grow to US$604.34 billion (19.34 trillion baht) by 2032.
This significant potential reflects a rising recognition of LGBTQ+ travelers as pivotal contributors to the global economy.
Demographic studies indicate that support for LGBTQIAN+ rights is growing, particularly among younger generations.
A Gallup survey revealed that 22.3% of Generation Z in the United States identify as LGBTQIAN+, compared to 9.8% of Millennials, 4.5% of Generation X, 2.3% of Baby Boomers, and 1.1% of the Silent Generation.
Globally, marriage equality continues to gain traction, with a 2023 Eurobarometer survey highlighting strong public support in Europe: Sweden and the Netherlands both report 94% approval for same-sex marriage legalization, while Denmark is close behind at 93%.
In Thailand, over six million people identify as part of the LGBTQIAN+ community, contributing an estimated 150 billion baht annually to the economy, equating to approximately a 0.3% boost to the country's GDP, as per findings from Mahidol University’s College of Management.
Legislation supporting marriage equality is expected to further enhance tourism and investment opportunities, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand forecasting that revenues from LGBTQIAN+ tourists could reach US$2 billion (65.59 billion baht) per year.
The popularity of Thai culture, particularly through the Girls’ Love genre of television series, has also seen significant global engagement, with viewership figures rising to around 800 million.
This genre is expected to generate up to 2 billion baht annually, reinforcing Thailand's cultural influence on a global scale.
Thailand has emerged as a leading destination for gender-affirming surgery, with medical tourism in this area projected to approach 16 billion baht by 2025.
According to Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, Chief Marketing Officer of Central Pattana, the country is viewed as an emotional safe haven for LGBTQIAN+ travelers, especially those from China, South Korea, and the Middle East, who appreciate Thailand's culture of acceptance.
In line with these developments, Central Pattana has initiated Thailand’s Pride Celebration 2025: “Pride For All,” designed to transform shopping centres across the country into inclusive spaces that celebrate self-expression and equality.
The company anticipates that approximately 1.3 million individuals will partake in events across its centres throughout June, reflecting a notable increase from the previous year’s participation of 1 million.
