Thailand's Constitutional Court Suspends Prime Minister Over Controversial Dialogue
The Court's unanimous decision follows a petition concerning a conversation about border issues with Cambodian officials.
Thailand's Constitutional Court has voted unanimously, 9-0, to accept a petition filed by 36 senators regarding Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's conduct.
In a subsequent decision, the Court suspended Shinawatra from her duties by a vote of 7-2.
The petition, invoking Sections 170 and 82 of the Thai Constitution, calls for a ruling on whether the Prime Minister should be removed from office due to her recent discussions with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen concerning border issues between Thailand and Cambodia.
In the interim, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit will assume the role of acting prime minister until Phumtham Wechayachai, who is set to receive royal endorsement as Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, is confirmed on July 3.
Furthermore, Paetongtarn Shinawatra is scheduled to receive royal endorsement for her position as Culture Minister on the same date, although the implications of this suspension for her prospective role remain uncertain.
