A 62-year-old woman, identified only by her surname Peng, died after being brought in a wheelchair to a branch of the Agricultural Bank of China in Zhuzhou, Hunan province.

The incident occurred on May 14, 2025, after Peng’s daughter attempted to withdraw funds from her mother’s account using Peng’s identity card and deposit book.

The transaction was unsuccessful due to repeated incorrect password entries.

Bank staff reportedly informed the family that Peng would need to appear in person to resolve the issue.

Although the daughter explained that her mother was gravely ill and recovering from a fractured leg due to a recent fall, the request was denied.

Peng, who also suffered from diabetes, was brought to the bank by another daughter and her husband.

Upon arrival, Peng was unable to complete the necessary biometric face recognition checks.

She appeared unresponsive and could not nod or blink as required by the system.

After an hour in the branch, her daughters took her outside for air, where she collapsed and died at the entrance.

Authorities have stated that Peng died from a sudden outbreak of illness.

An official investigation has been opened.

According to a relative, the family has reached an agreement with the bank.

The bank will cover Peng’s funeral costs and provide one hundred thousand yuan in financial compensation, described as “consolation money.” The family has indicated they will not pursue further legal action and plan to return to their hometown.

A bank employee, speaking anonymously, stated that staff were not informed of Peng’s medical condition prior to her arrival at the branch.
