Study Highlights Attractiveness of Thai Destinations and Financial Factors
A study titled 'Malaysian Outbound and Domestic Travel Behaviour' conducted in early 2024 examined why Malaysians are often seen traveling to neighboring countries like Thailand.
According to the findings shared by the ministry, 41.9% of Malaysians are attracted to destinations in neighboring countries, primarily driven by the allure of Thai cities such as Hat Yai, Krabi, and Phuket.
The financial aspect of travel is also significant, with 25.5% of participants indicating that budget constraints influence their decisions.
Additionally, 24.9% are motivated by the opportunity to engage in new experiences and activities.
The study, mentioned in a parliamentary reply by DATUK ROSOL WAHID (PN-Hulu Terengganu), also highlights that travel decisions are influenced by discounts and word-of-mouth, albeit to a lesser extent.
Statistics from January to September 2024 show that Thailand received over 3.7 million tourists from Malaysia, with nearly half entering through the Sadao Immigration Checkpoint in Songkhla Province.
Additionally, Malaysian media reported that over RM100 million was spent in Thailand by Malaysian tourists during the Malaysia Day long weekend.
Conversely, Malaysia has seen an increase in Thai tourists, totaling 1.1 million by August 2024, reflecting a 19.7% rise from the prior year.
This data provides a comprehensive overview of the travel dynamics between Malaysia and Thailand.
