Thailand Moves Toward Emergency Energy Decree as Middle East Conflict Threatens Fuel Supplies

Government prepares sweeping measures to secure reserves, stabilize prices and protect the economy from global oil disruption
Thailand’s government is preparing an emergency decree aimed at safeguarding the country’s energy security as global oil supply risks intensify following escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Officials have begun activating contingency plans designed to shield the Thai economy and households from potential supply disruptions and rising fuel costs.

The measures follow the closure of key maritime routes linked to the Persian Gulf, including the Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor that normally carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.

The government’s response includes plans to suspend petroleum exports in order to preserve domestic fuel reserves, which currently provide about sixty days of supply.

Authorities say the priority is to ensure sufficient energy availability for the public and key industries while global markets remain volatile.

Energy officials have also ordered coal-fired and hydropower plants to operate at full capacity to guarantee electricity generation if fuel imports become constrained.

At the same time, the Ministry of Energy is preparing to increase natural-gas production from domestic fields in the Gulf of Thailand and from regional sources, while delaying maintenance work at certain gas facilities to maintain output during the crisis period.

An emergency energy monitoring centre has been established to track developments and coordinate government responses.

The centre will assess supply conditions, manage national reserves and recommend further measures if global disruptions intensify.

Authorities are also preparing financial interventions to stabilize prices.

The Oil Fuel Fund may be deployed to subsidize retail fuel costs in order to reduce the impact of higher global oil prices on transportation, businesses and household expenses.

Thailand’s proactive approach reflects the government’s determination to maintain stability during a period of global uncertainty.

Officials say the measures are designed to strengthen resilience while ensuring that the country’s economy and citizens remain protected from external shocks.

Energy security has long been a strategic priority for Thailand.

The country relies heavily on imported fuels for electricity generation and transportation, making it sensitive to international supply disruptions and price fluctuations.

By mobilizing emergency tools and expanding domestic production, authorities aim to reinforce the nation’s energy resilience while longer-term diversification efforts continue.

Government leaders say the proposed emergency decree will provide additional legal authority for rapid intervention should the situation worsen, allowing Thailand to respond decisively to protect national energy security and economic stability.
