Prime Minister Srettha Orders Nationwide Urine Tests to Combat Drug Abuse
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered nationwide urine tests to identify drug abusers. Authorities aim to rehabilitate users and arrest dealers. Between October 2023 and July 2024, drug-related arrests totaled 184,411, and significant quantities of narcotics were seized.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has directed relevant agencies to conduct comprehensive 'X-ray' operations to identify drug abusers across Thailand.
Provincial governors will lead efforts to test high-risk individuals aged 16 and above through urine tests.
These operations will involve cooperation with the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, local police, civil society, and community leaders.
The focus is on identifying drug users for rehabilitation and arresting drug dealers.
Furthermore, the Public Health, Interior, and Defence ministries have been tasked with constructing rehab facilities, while the Labour and Social Development and Human Security ministries will offer career training to rehabilitated individuals.
Education ministries will monitor students to prevent drug use.
Between October 2023 and July 2024, authorities arrested 184,411 suspects involving drugs, seizing 764 million amphetamine tablets, 1.27 tonnes of heroin, 4.17 tonnes of ketamine, 30 kilos of cocaine, and 127,190 MDMA tablets, with assets worth 6.34 billion baht confiscated and 108,304 individuals sent for rehabilitation.
