Safety Enhancements for Bangkok's Monorail Systems
Bangkok's Yellow and Pink monorail systems are set for safety upgrades. New stainless steel locking mechanisms will be installed on guidewheels to prevent accidents like the January 2 incident. Initial testing begins at the end of the month, with increased safety checks supervised by transportation authorities.
The operators of Bangkok's Yellow and Pink monorail systems will upgrade the guidewheels on all trains to improve safety.
This decision follows an incident on January 2, when a guidewheel from a Yellow Line train fell onto a taxi below.
BTS Group Holdings CEO Surapong Laoha-unya, director of Eastern Bangkok Monorail Co (EBM) and Northern Bangkok Monorail (NBM), announced on Thursday that new stainless steel locking mechanisms will be tested and implemented.
Alstom Thailand, the train manufacturer, is collaborating on these enhancements.
Initial tests will start at the end of the month, and once confirmed, similar upgrades will be applied to the Pink Line.
Increased safety checks will be overseen by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand and the Department of Rail Transport.
