Thailand has intensified diplomatic efforts with Iran as it seeks urgent assistance on multiple fronts following a maritime incident in the Strait of Hormuz, including the search for missing crew members, the safety of vital shipping routes and support for Thai nationals impacted by the regional conflict.

The move follows an attack on the Thai-flagged cargo vessel Mayuree Naree on March 11, when the ship was struck near Oman amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East.

Of the 23 crew members on board, 20 were rescued after abandoning the vessel, while three remain missing, believed to have been in the engine room at the time of the strike.

Rescue operations have been complicated by the ship’s location in an active conflict zone.

Thailand’s Foreign Minister held direct discussions with his Iranian counterpart, requesting cooperation to facilitate access to the damaged vessel and accelerate search-and-rescue efforts.

Iranian authorities have indicated a willingness to assist, including coordinating with naval forces to support the operation.

At the same time, Bangkok has sought assurances regarding the safe passage of Thai commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy and shipping corridors.

The request underscores Thailand’s neutral position and its reliance on uninterrupted maritime trade routes for economic stability.

The Thai government has also broadened its response to address the welfare of its citizens across the region.

Diplomatic missions have worked actively to evacuate nationals from affected areas, with hundreds already assisted in returning home or relocating to safer locations.

Additional evacuation efforts remain under consideration as conditions evolve.

Thailand’s leadership has emphasized dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred path forward, calling on all parties to de-escalate tensions and restore stability.
