Surge in Flight Arrivals Anticipated During Songkran Holidays in Thailand
Thailand's Transport Ministry forecasts significant increases in both international and domestic flights during the upcoming Songkran festival.
International and domestic flights during the Songkran holidays, which take place from April 11 to 17, 2025, are projected to increase by 9.1% and 22.7%, respectively, compared to the previous year, as reported by the Ministry of Transport.
In light of this anticipated surge, the ministry has enacted special measures at six major airports administered by Airports of Thailand (AoT), including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang (Chiang Rai), Phuket, and Hat Yai.
From April 11 to 17, these airports are expected to handle a combined total of 267,603 international flights, reflecting a 9.1% rise from 2024, alongside 213,792 domestic flights, which marks a 22.7% increase over the same period.
The total number of anticipated passengers is expected to reach 79.19 million, an 18.3% rise from last year, with 48.24 million of these being international travelers (up by 14.1%) and 30.94 million being domestic passengers (up by 25.5%).
To facilitate smoother travel experiences, AoT is implementing several measures, including the provision of complimentary parking at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, and Phuket airports from midnight on April 11 to midnight on April 16. Additional resources will also include an increased number of baggage trolleys, airline check-in counters, and staff at key service points, including restrooms.
Travelers are encouraged to take advantage of self-check-in and baggage drop systems to expedite their processing.
Furthermore, Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri has instructed the Department of Airports (DOA), which oversees 29 additional airports nationwide, to enhance safety inspections and work closely with the Tourist Police to ensure passenger safety.
She also emphasized that taxi and car rental services must maintain the roadworthiness of their vehicles.
