Thai Government to Close CI Centres for Undocumented Myanmar Migrants on July 7
The Thai government will close six CI centres for undocumented Myanmar migrants on July 7, 2023. Migrants with Pink Cards will need to travel to border towns for PJ processing, doubling their costs. Concerns are raised about overcrowding, poor sanitation, and staff exhaustion.
The Thai government has announced the closure of six CI centres for undocumented Myanmar migrants on July 7, 2023.
These centres are located in Surat Thani, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Mahachai, Samut Prakan, and Chonburi.
U Moe Gyo, chairman of the Joint Action Committee for Burmese Affairs (JACBA), highlighted the difficulties this closure will impose on both employers and workers.
Closed centres include those in Songkhla and Nakhon Sawan.
Migrants with Pink Cards will now need to travel to Myawady, Kawthoung, and Tachilek for PJ (Passport of Job) processing, doubling their costs.
U Moe Gyo expressed concerns about overcrowding, poor sanitation, and the exhaustion of CI centre staff as a result of these measures.
