Since July 19, 2024, the Bangkok-Vientiane rail route has served over thirteen thousand passengers, prompting the State Railway of Thailand to add another passenger wagon. Efforts are underway to enhance cross-border freight and passenger services, with a goal of achieving 14 round trips daily. These developments support regional ties and position Thailand as a future rail transport hub in ASEAN.
Since its opening on July 19, 2024, the Bangkok-Vientiane rail route has served over 13,000 passengers, leading the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to add an additional passenger wagon to meet demand.
SRT Governor Veeris Ammarapala and Daochinda Siharat, governor of the Lao National Railway State Enterprise, have signed a memorandum to enhance freight and passenger services across the border.
The two parties aim to achieve 14 round trips daily, with a plan to increase frequency further.
The new passenger wagon will include air-conditioned sleeping accommodations.
The train service runs daily from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station in Bangkok to Vientiane (Khamsavath) Station in Laos.
Additionally, connections from Udon Thani and Nong Khai to Vientiane are provided.
Renovated decommissioned carriages will enhance freight services between Thanaleng Station, Vientiane and Nong Khai Station, Thailand.
These efforts strengthen regional ties and position Thailand as a potential rail transport hub in the ASEAN region.
