Thailand Announces Phuket Monorail to Boost Transport Infrastructure
The Thai government has announced a plan to improve Phuket's transportation, including a new monorail connecting the airport with Phuket Town. Immediate actions include upgrading Highway 402. Long-term plans involve an expressway and a light rail system linking Phuket International Airport with Ha Yeak Chalong intersection by 2031. Additionally, Phuket Airport will be expanded to handle 18 million passengers annually by 2031.
The Thai government has unveiled an ambitious plan to improve Phuket's transportation infrastructure, including a new monorail system connecting the airport with Phuket Town.
This initiative comes as a response to the island's strong economic performance, which saw over 300 billion baht in circulation last year.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, recognizing Phuket's potential, has directed the Transport Ministry to develop immediate, medium-term, and long-term plans to enhance the island's transportation infrastructure.
The immediate plan involves upgrading Highway 402 with smart traffic signals and no-parking zones.
The medium-term plan includes expanding Highway 4027 to four lanes by 2026.
In the long term, an expressway connecting Patong Beach with Phuket Airport is scheduled for completion by 2030.
The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand will conduct a feasibility study for a 41.7-kilometre light rail system linking Phuket International Airport and Ha Yeak Chalong intersection, expected to be operational by 2031.
Additionally, a deep-sea port feasibility study is underway to support cruise tourism.
The Airports of Thailand are also planning to expand Phuket Airport's capacity to handle 18 million passengers annually by 2031.
