Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expresses support for Malaysia's leadership within ASEAN and its involvement in peace negotiations.
Thailand has shown its full support for Malaysia's chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra highlighted the necessity of enhanced cooperation to tackle mutual security and economic issues, thereby ensuring regional resilience in the face of shifting geopolitical dynamics.
Malaysia’s selected theme for its chairmanship, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' is in harmony with ASEAN's common objectives.
In a recent declaration, Paetongtarn underscored Malaysia's proactive stance on regional involvement, which includes initiatives like the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council + China Summit, designed to promote strategic dialogue and economic collaboration.
She conveyed her confidence that Malaysia’s leadership would aid ASEAN in navigating geopolitical and economic challenges.
Thailand also recognized Malaysia’s vital role as the sole official foreign mediator in the peace talks concerning Thailand’s southern border provinces.
Paetongtarn reiterated Thailand’s dedication to partnering closely with Malaysia to achieve peace and stability in the region.
Moreover, the Thai Prime Minister discussed the appointment of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as an informal adviser to Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship.
She clarified that he serves solely in a personal capacity and that any opinions shared in this role would be his own.
Nonetheless, she pointed out that his substantial political and business background could enhance regional cooperation.
Malaysia officially began its ASEAN chairmanship on January 1, 2025, marking its fifth leadership term since the association's founding in 1967. As chair, Malaysia intends to strengthen ASEAN's central role, foster diplomatic relations, and broaden economic partnerships throughout the region and beyond.
