Thousands Rally in Phnom Penh Amid Rising Border Tensions
State‑organized demonstration supports Cambodia against Thai actions
Thousands of Cambodians took to the streets of Phnom Penh Wednesday in a government‑organized rally to back their nation amid escalating border tensions with Thailand following the death of a Cambodian soldier.
Demonstrators, including monks and students, waved national flags and portraits of Prime Minister Hun Manet and former Prime Minister Hun Sen while chanting slogans affirming Cambodia’s territorial integrity.
The protest coincided with government measures banning Thai films, internet services, electricity, and produce, and a formal referral of four disputed border zones to the International Court of Justice, despite Thailand’s insistence on settling the matter through bilateral mechanisms.
The next high‑level border meeting is scheduled for September.
