Vietnamese PM Advocates New Economic Corridors for Greater Mekong Region
Focus on Innovation and Sustainability at the GMS Summit in China
At the eighth Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Summit in Kunming, China's Yunnan Province, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed the development of new-generation economic corridors centered on innovation, sustainability, and connectivity.
The summit, attended by leaders from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and China, alongside the Asian Development Bank and other organizations, highlighted the significant strides achieved by the GMS over 30 years.
Since 2021, the GMS has mobilized $133 billion for over 500 development projects, vastly improving infrastructure and energy resources in the region.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang underscored innovation’s role in economic growth and pledged multi-entry Mekong-Lancang visas for business and experts.
The leaders agreed on a GMS Innovation System focusing on digitalization, green transition, and connectivity.
Prime Minister Chinh outlined five foundational lessons from past cooperation and suggested new corridors combining technological innovation with economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability.
The summit concluded with the adoption of the GMS Innovation Strategy for Development 2030, aiming for a future marked by innovation, dynamism, and sustainable progress in the region.
