WOW: Bangkok Upgrades Over 700 Kilometres of Sidewalks in Major Urban Revamp
City targets 1,000 kilometres of high-standard footpaths by 2026, enhancing pedestrian access to public transport
Bangkok’s Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has completed more than 774 kilometres of upgraded sidewalks across the city as part of an initiative to deliver 1,000 kilometres of improved pedestrian infrastructure by 2026. As of April 2025, a total of 87 routes have been completed under the programme. The initiative is focused on enhancing pedestrian accessibility and connectivity to Bangkok’s expanding electric train system, which includes 11 routes, 297 stations, and over 466 kilometres of rail lines.
Approximately 58.2% of Bangkok residents use sidewalks to reach public transport, walking an average of 800 metres in ten minutes, compared to 31.2% who rely on private vehicles.During a recent site inspection, BMA spokesperson Aekvarunyoo Amrapala led a delegation of journalists to view progress at Phran Nok Market in Bangkok Noi District and Itsaraphap MRT Station in Bangkok Yai District.
The Itsaraphap Road segment, which connects the Thonburi, Bangkok Yai, and Bangkok Noi districts, spans four kilometres and began construction on June 18, 2024. It is scheduled for completion by April 2025.Key routes undergoing improvements include Itsaraphap Road, Phet Kasem Road, Charoen Krung Road, and Charan Sanit Wong Road.
The upgrades are designed to meet new footpath standards and contribute to wider goals such as urban flood prevention, improved drainage under the 'Defeat Fat, Prevent Floods' campaign, increased safety for pedestrians and motorists, and promotion of public health and mass transit use.The BMA’s broader pedestrian infrastructure project is part of the city’s strategy to modernise its streetscape, reduce reliance on private transport, and improve urban resilience.
