Authorities Target Over 4,000 Gambling-Linked Line Accounts
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society in Thailand has targeted more than 4,000 official Line accounts linked to illegal online gambling sites for closure, following an online surveillance operation. Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong emphasized that the Line app, with 54 million users, had become a tool for illegal activities including gambling and online scams. Those involved in illegal gambling face up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to five thousand baht.
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society in Thailand has targeted more than 4,000 official Line accounts linked to illegal online gambling sites for closure.
This action follows an online surveillance operation conducted between February 24 and August 9, 2024.
Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong emphasized that the Line app, with 54 million users, had become a tool for illegal activities including gambling and online scams.
Of the 4,136 accounts identified, 2,532 contained short videos advertising gambling websites, while the rest served as access points to these sites.
Those involved in illegal gambling face up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to five thousand baht.
The ministry's steps aim to prevent gamblers and scammers from reaching potential victims via the popular chat app.
