BIMSTEC Summit Commences in Bangkok Amid Regional Enhancements
Leaders of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation convene to strengthen cooperation across sectors.
The 6th BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit commenced in Bangkok on March 4, 2025, with member states focusing on deepening cooperation in various sectors including trade, energy, and climate change.
Leaders from seven countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand—gathered to address regional issues and chart a collaborative future in the context of global challenges.
During the opening remarks, Thai Prime Minister highlighted Thailand's commitment to fostering greater integration and connectivity among the BIMSTEC nations, emphasizing the role of the group in enhancing regional security and economic prosperity.
The summit is set to feature discussions on initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development and advancing technological cooperation amongst member states.
A key agenda item includes the establishment of a BIMSTEC Free Trade Area (FTA), which is expected to bolster intra-regional trade.
Despite the logistical challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, member countries have shown a renewed interest in accelerating trade agreements and economic collaborations that facilitate post-pandemic recovery.
In addition to economic topics, the leaders are expected to address security cooperation, particularly concerning maritime security in the Bay of Bengal, which has been a point of concern due to increasing piracy and illegal fishing activities.
Climate change initiatives are also on the agenda, highlighting the urgent need for collaborative action among nations vulnerable to environmental threats.
During this summit, several bilateral meetings are anticipated, which will provide opportunities for leaders to discuss specific areas of mutual interest in greater detail, reinforcing diplomatic ties and fostering collaborations beyond the larger multilateral framework.
This year marks a significant moment for BIMSTEC as it aims to enhance its visibility and effectiveness in addressing not only regional issues but also contributing to global discussions on sustainable development and security.
