Local Election Registration Postponed in Four Southern Thai Provinces Amid Flood Crisis
Flood-affected Songkhla, Satun, Pattani and Narathiwat see delay in subdistrict council candidate registration dates
Authorities in Thailand have suspended the registration period for local elections in four southern provinces after widespread flooding disrupted normal operations.
The national election body announced that candidate sign-ups for subdistrict councils and heads of subdistrict administrations in Songkhla, Satun, Pattani and Narathiwat — originally scheduled for 1–5 December 2025 — have been rescheduled to 8–12 December 2025. The postponement follows severe flood damage that rendered many registration venues inaccessible or unsafe.
The deluge has also forced the suspension of the broader 2025 local-official recruitment exam in the southern region.
The central exam board declared that testing centres in the affected zones (Southern region, Zone 1 and Zone 2) will remain closed until the floodwaters recede and safe conditions are restored.
In the meantime, no new test date has been announced.
The decision to delay both voter registration and civil-service examinations underlines the scale of disruption in the South, where heavy rain and flooding have damaged infrastructure and displaced residents.
Election officials said the move aims to avoid unfair disadvantages to locals who were unable to travel or gather documents during the floods.
Provincial electoral authorities will closely monitor the weather and situation on the ground before confirming final scheduling.
Meanwhile, affected communities are being urged to stay informed via official channels and prioritize safety while returning to normal civic procedures.
The postponements mark one of the first major impacts of the flood crisis on Thailand’s 2025–26 local elections cycle, raising concerns about potential broader delays if conditions do not improve swiftly.
