Progress Update on MRT Purple Line Southern Extension

Progress Update on MRT Purple Line Southern Extension

Construction of the southern extension of the MRT Purple Line is now over halfway completed, with safety inspections following a recent earthquake.
The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) has announced that the southern extension of the MRT Purple Line, which will connect Tao Poon and Rat Burana, is currently 53.4% completed.

This update was provided by MRTA chairman Montri Dechasakulkorn after conducting a safety inspection prompted by a significant earthquake that recently affected Bangkok.

The inspection specifically concentrated on the project's fifth contract, which entails the construction of elevated tracks and stations between Dao Khanong and Khru Nai, as well as the train depot and car park building situated near the Rat Burana canal.

Mr. Montri emphasized that the visit was intended to ensure compliance with the highest safety standards, especially in light of the earthquake’s implications for structural integrity.

The overall line measures 23.63 kilometers in length, comprising a 14.29-kilometer underground segment and a 9.34-kilometer elevated section.

During the inspection, Mr. Montri remarked, "As the project consists of both underground and elevated structures, safety is our top priority."

The ongoing work under the fifth contract includes vital tasks such as the installation of viaduct segments and suspended cross beams.

Consequently, it is deemed essential to thoroughly inspect various components, including launching gantries, scaffolding, piers, and the aforementioned viaduct segments.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, Mr. Montri has instructed the MRTA to rigorously enforce international construction standards, particularly concerning materials designed to enhance the structure's resilience to seismic events.

Furthermore, the MRTA has been tasked with improving the management of the environmental impact of the project, particularly concerning PM2.5 dust pollution.

Measures will be taken to mitigate airborne dust, including the regular spraying of water around the construction site, ensuring that machinery complies with environmental standards, and minimizing dust-generating activities.

As of March 31, 2025, updates confirmed that the overall progress of the Purple Line southern extension stands at 53.4%.
