Thailand Seeks Larger LNG Supply From US Producer Cheniere to Strengthen Energy Security
Bangkok explores expanding deliveries to about 1.3 million tonnes annually as part of efforts to secure stable gas supplies and manage energy risks
Thailand’s Energy Ministry has opened discussions with US liquefied natural gas exporter Cheniere Energy to increase LNG deliveries to the country to around 1.3 million tonnes per year, a move aimed at strengthening long-term energy security and ensuring stable fuel supplies.
Officials said the talks are part of a broader effort to accelerate LNG shipments and secure additional volumes as Thailand works to safeguard its energy system amid global market uncertainty and geopolitical disruptions affecting fuel flows.
The negotiations build on an existing long-term agreement between Thailand’s state-owned energy company PTT and Cheniere Energy, under which PTT Global LNG agreed to purchase one million tonnes of LNG annually for twenty years beginning in 2026. The deal marked Thailand’s first direct long-term LNG procurement contract with a US producer and was designed to provide a stable supply linked to the Henry Hub gas benchmark price.
Under the new discussions, Thailand is seeking to expand the contracted supply to roughly 1.3 million tonnes a year while potentially bringing forward deliveries where possible.
Energy officials say the objective is to ensure the country has reliable fuel for electricity generation and industrial demand while cushioning consumers from sudden volatility in international energy markets.
Natural gas plays a central role in Thailand’s power system, accounting for a majority share of electricity generation.
Ensuring steady LNG imports has therefore become a strategic priority for the government as domestic gas production declines and the country increasingly relies on imported fuel.
Thailand has been steadily expanding its LNG infrastructure to support this transition.
The country operates a major LNG receiving terminal at Map Ta Phut in Rayong province and has added additional regasification capacity through a second terminal to accommodate rising import volumes.
Energy authorities say strengthening partnerships with reliable suppliers is a key part of the national strategy to maintain affordable and stable electricity prices while supporting long-term economic growth.
By deepening cooperation with international LNG producers such as Cheniere, Thailand aims to diversify supply sources and reinforce resilience in its energy system.
The ongoing talks highlight Thailand’s proactive approach to securing dependable energy supplies as global demand for liquefied natural gas continues to grow and competition for cargoes intensifies across Asia.
