Quality Assurance in Thailand's High-Speed Rail Project Following Earthquake
State Railway of Thailand confirms steel quality meets engineering standards after rigorous inspections prompted by seismic activity.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has reaffirmed that the steel utilized in the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project adheres to all required engineering and quality standards.
This assurance comes in the wake of public concerns stirred by a significant earthquake in Myanmar on March 28, which caused the collapse of the State Audit Office building in Bangkok.
SRT governor Veeris Ammarapala announced that the railway authority has accelerated inspections, focusing particularly on Contract 3-1. This contract pertains to the construction of the Kaeng Koi-Klang Dong and Phang Asoke-Bandai Ma sections.
The construction is being undertaken by a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development and China Railway No.10 Engineering Group Co, the same companies responsible for the building that collapsed in Chatuchak district.
Expert engineers have been dispatched to the construction site to assess the structural integrity of the elevated track sections.
The inspections confirmed the absence of cracks or damage, asserting that the structures were designed to endure seismic vibrations and constructed in line with established standards.
Governor Ammarapala noted that the SRT collaborated closely with the Railway Transport Department, the Industrial Standards Institute, and the Iron and Steel Institute to collect steel samples from depots in Muak Lek and Thap Kwang.
These samples underwent comprehensive laboratory testing to evaluate critical properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, bending capacity, and chemical composition.
The results of the testing indicated that all samples met the required standards, affirming that the steel is entirely appropriate for railway construction.
Furthermore, the SRT has implemented strict quality control protocols with inspections conducted at every phase, from the manufacturing process in factories to on-site installation.
Governor Ammarapala emphasized that only steel that has passed rigorous factory testing and subsequent inspections is utilized.
Supervisors oversee the construction process to ensure compliance with safety protocols and quality standards.
The Kaeng Koi-Klang Dong and Phang Asoke-Bandai Ma section is an integral part of the ambitious 252.3km high-speed rail route that will connect Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima.
The joint venture holding Contract 3-1 was selected from a competitive bidding process encompassing ten separate contracts.
The completion of this section is projected to take approximately three years.
