The project, spearheaded by the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), will involve a 3,505-meter runway and cost around 15.2 billion baht. Concerns about delays in the high-speed railway connecting three major airports are being addressed, impacting the runway project timeline.
The U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport is set to start construction on its second runway this year.
Chula Sukmanop, secretary-general of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), announced that the project is seeking a loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
Italian-Thai Development (ITD) has been chosen as the contractor.
The project, planned in collaboration with the Royal Thai Navy (RTN), will feature a 3,505-meter runway located 1,140 meters from the current runway, and is expected to handle 70 flights per hour.
The total investment is estimated at 15.2 billion baht.
Concerns were raised about delays in the high-speed rail system connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airports.
The high-speed rail project, contracted with the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and Asia Era One, requires a tunnel under the new runway.
Construction of the runway will take 36 months, and the rail tunnel must be completed within 18 months.
If the rail tunnel is not completed by early 2025, the project may be reassigned to SRT.
Separately, U-Tapao International Aviation CEO Weerawat Phantawangkul revealed plans for extensive airport development, including three new buildings over a 6,500-rai area, requiring at least 100 billion baht for the first phase.
