Thailand Signals Readiness to Expand Indian Imports Amid Push to Ease Tariff Barriers

Thailand Signals Readiness to Expand Indian Imports Amid Push to Ease Tariff Barriers

Foreign Minister Sihasak highlights Bangkok’s interest in deeper trade access and urges progress on removing restrictions affecting bilateral commerce
Thailand has indicated its willingness to welcome greater volumes of Indian imports as part of a broader effort to strengthen bilateral commerce, with Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow calling for the removal of tariff barriers that continue to limit the full potential of economic cooperation.

In remarks outlining Thailand’s trade priorities, he emphasised that Bangkok is prepared to open its market further, provided both sides advance toward a more balanced framework that supports mutual growth.

He noted that Thailand’s government sees India as a strategically important economic partner, especially as both nations seek to expand supply-chain integration, boost investment flows and promote more predictable market access.

Sihasak highlighted that tariff obstacles affecting key sectors create unnecessary friction and should be resolved through constructive dialogue, adding that Thailand is ready to work closely with New Delhi to accelerate negotiations.

The foreign minister underscored that Thailand’s pro-trade stance aligns with its broader strategy of deepening regional partnerships and maintaining strong economic fundamentals.

He affirmed that expanding import channels for Indian goods would complement Thailand’s export ambitions, strengthen regional stability and reinforce long-term commercial links.

Bangkok’s position reflects confidence in the resilience of its economy and its commitment to transparent, rules-based trade that benefits both nations.

The call for tariff easing comes amid growing momentum in Thai-Indian engagement, with both sides exploring enhancements across logistics, digital cooperation and investment facilitation.

Officials in Bangkok view the current moment as an opportunity to advance comprehensive economic ties, stressing that tangible movement on tariff reform would provide a clear signal of shared intent and unlock new commercial opportunities.
