Thailand will distribute 145 billion baht of its 'Digital Wallet' handout programme earlier than scheduled to support vulnerable groups, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat announced on September 9, 2024.
The government has prepared 450 billion baht in total for the programme, which aims to stimulate economic activity by transferring 10,000 baht to 50 million Thais.
Initially scheduled for the last quarter of the year, the measure is part of Thailand's efforts to jumpstart its economy, which grew 2.3% in the second quarter.
Following the court's removal of Srettha Thavisin as premier, and the subsequent rise of Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the distribution will start this month.
As of now, 32 million people, including vulnerable groups, have registered for the programme.
Some of the handouts may be distributed in cash.
Despite criticism from economists, the government argues the policy is crucial for economic stimulation, with the central bank predicting a modest growth of 2.6% this year.
