Collaboration Boosts Thai Rail Transport Innovation

The State Railway of Thailand and Rail Technology Research and Development Agency sign MoU to enhance local rail technology.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and the Rail Technology Research and Development Agency (RTRDA) have formalized a collaboration aimed at advancing innovations within the rail transport sector.

On March 15, 2025, the organizations signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop technologies that will enhance the compatibility and efficiency of the country's rail industry and decrease its reliance on imported technology.

Transport permanent secretary Chayatan Phromson highlighted that this partnership will prioritize the enhancement of human resources within the rail transport workforce and the innovation of rail technologies.

The initiative seeks not only to reduce logistics costs but also to improve Thailand's competitive standing in rail freight transportation on a global scale.

The Thai government has invested significant resources into railway infrastructure, including hundreds of billions of baht towards the construction of a new double-track train network which spans over 300 kilometers.

This network is anticipated to be completed later this year.

Further developments are planned, with the RTRDA coordinating with the Ministry of Industry and various private sector companies to amplify domestic capacity in rail transport innovation.

SRT governor Weeris Amrapal indicated that prototypes for Thai-manufactured locomotives, rail cars, and train components are currently under development, which will support the ongoing modernization of Thailand’s railway system.

In addition to innovation efforts, the SRT is set to upgrade 500 non-air conditioned trains as part of a broader railway rehabilitation initiative.

The first phase involves the enhancement of 40 trains, backed by a budget of 295.60 million baht.

This will include improvements such as upgraded seat cushions, air conditioning installations, restroom renovations, and the implementation of more energy-efficient power supply systems to promote long-term cost savings.
