Medical Council Challenges NHSO's Universal Healthcare Scheme
A conflict has emerged in Thailand over the National Health Security Office's policy to provide free medication for 16 common ailments under the universal healthcare scheme.
The Medical Council of Thailand has taken legal action against this policy, prompting calls from civil groups like the Thailand Consumer Council (TCC) for the council to withdraw the lawsuit.
TCC Secretary-General Saree Aongsomwang voiced concerns, stressing that the policy has reduced hospital congestion and provided crucial access to healthcare.
Implemented in 2022, the policy has reportedly benefitted over 1.79 million people.
Despite the Medical Council's opposition, claiming the potential risk of improper treatment, advocates argue there are no safety issues under proper pharmacy supervision.
The ongoing legal battle has created uncertainty among the public, while the TCC and the Pharmacy Council of Thailand call for a resolution that prioritizes patient welfare.
