Cabinet Approves THB20 Train Fare Cap Until November 2025
Extension of Fare Cap for State-Run Red and Purple Line Trains to Alleviate Financial Burden
On Friday, the Cabinet endorsed the continuation of a THB20 fare cap for the state-operated Red and Purple line electric trains, effective from December 1, 2024, to November 30, 2025.
This initiative aims to reduce financial strain on the populace and is projected to cost the government around 300 million baht in lost revenue, according to government spokesperson Jirayut Huangsap.
The State Railway of Thailand's Red Line is anticipated to incur losses of 35.35 million baht, while the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand's Purple Line may lose approximately 272.99 million baht due to the fare cap.
This fare adjustment was a major electoral pledge by the ruling Pheu Thai Party and was initially launched in October 2023 for state-operated routes, with plans to cover all routes by September 2025.
The Cabinet's decision was made during a mobile meeting held at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, marking the first such meeting under PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra's administration.
Following the session, the Prime Minister and her family visited an exhibition displaying local handicrafts hosted by the university, as stated by Jirayut Huangsap.
