Demolition of Klong Toey's Lao Market for New Bus Stop
Bangkok's initiative to improve pavement and public transport
On December 1, 2024, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) began demolishing the Lao Market in Bangkok's Klong Toey district to expand the pavement and install a new bus stop.
The market, located along Rama IV Road, was originally set up as a temporary vending site in 2005 but evolved into a more permanent market, facing resistance to relocation.
Post-pandemic economic challenges led vendors to seek delays in the plan, but the district eventually moved forward with the demolition.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited the site, recognizing the vendors' plight but affirming the need for pedestrian space.
Most vendors have been relocated to Klong Toey Market 2, making way for a 300-meter sidewalk with the new bus stop.
Deputy Governor Chakkaphan Phewngam confirmed the dismantling of structures and disconnection of utilities by December 1, with the BMA enforcing law and order and proceeding with landscape improvements.
