Danish Community in Thailand Seeks Embassy Guidance on Complex Rules Affecting Expatriates
Around thirty Danes attended an embassy-hosted briefing in Bangkok to receive updated guidance on family reunification, citizenship, pensions and other regulations relevant to living abroad
Around thirty Danish citizens residing in Thailand gathered at the Royal Danish Embassy in Bangkok on February sixth for an information session aimed at clarifying and explaining a range of Danish rules that affect life abroad.
The event was jointly organised by the Royal Danish Embassy, the non-profit Danes Worldwide and the Danish-Thai Chamber of Commerce, and brought together the expatriate community for practical guidance and updates on issues with legal and personal significance.
The briefing featured welcoming remarks from representatives of Danes Worldwide, followed by contributions from Ambassador Danny Annan and officials from the Danish-Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Church Council.
The main presentation was delivered live from Denmark by the Secretary-General of Danes Worldwide together with the organisation’s leading legal counsellor.
Participants were guided through recent developments in areas that included family reunification, Danish citizenship rules — such as the so-called twenty-two-year rule — pensions, challenges related to NemKonto bank accounts, driving licences, and procedures for admission to Danish schools and universities.
Beyond the technical guidance, Danes Worldwide also outlined its ongoing advocacy for expatriate Danes in the Danish Parliament, with priorities including clearer legislative inclusion of Danes living overseas and expanded tax provisions to support more flexible stays in Denmark.
Attendees were offered the opportunity to engage directly with experts on these matters, strengthening community understanding of the evolving regulatory landscape and reinforcing ties between the Danish state and its citizens abroad.
