Philippines Initiates Major Aviation Sector Overhaul
The Philippines unveiled a comprehensive modernization plan at the 2024 Aviation Summit, focusing on infrastructure, digitalization, and regulatory reforms. Transport Secretary Jaime J. Bautista announced plans to double Manila airport's capacity and commence a new airport in Bulacan in 2025, alongside regional airport improvements. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines is enhancing air navigation systems, supported by Japanese cooperation.
The Philippines, during the 2024 Aviation Summit held on October 2-3, announced an ambitious agenda to modernize its aviation sector.
This involves infrastructure upgrades, digital modernization, and regulatory reforms.
The summit, themed 'Climbing Towards Sustainable, Safe, Smart Philippine Aviation,' was organized by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, the Asian Business Aviation Association, and the Department of Transportation.
Philippine Transport Secretary Jaime J.
Bautista highlighted successful airport privatization at Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport, with plans to extend this model regionally.
Plans include doubling Manila airport's capacity from 35 million to 62 million passengers annually and commencing construction of the New Manila International Airport in Bulacan in 2025.
In addition, Bautista announced improvements for regional airports across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has upgraded the country's air navigation management system, and further upgrades are planned with the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
