Urgent Rescue for Stranded Elephants in Chiang Mai
Seven elephants are trapped in flooded pens at the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai's Mae Taeng district after heavy rains. Rescue efforts have been complicated by thick mud and water obstructing the pen doors, and the elephants have been stranded for over 30 hours. Officials are working with the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre for a rescue strategy.
In Chiang Mai's Mae Taeng district, seven adult elephants are trapped in flooded enclosures at the Elephant Nature Park following heavy rain earlier this week.
Rescue efforts have been hampered as divers struggle to unlock pens buried under thick mud and water, the Thai Elephant Alliance Association reported.
The elephants, exhausted from standing in water for over 30 hours, have shown aggression towards rescuers.
Theerapat Trungprakan, the association's president, noted the lack of a floor plan has made underwater navigation difficult.
The association is collaborating with the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang for an effective rescue strategy.
This incident is part of a broader challenge, with Mae Taeng district housing 38 of the over 80 elephant pens in Chiang Mai, all affected by recent flooding.
