Excise Department Anticipates Fines of 2.5 Billion Baht for Tax Evasion
The Excise Department of Thailand expects to collect nearly two point five billion baht in fines from smuggling untaxed goods in the 2024 fiscal year. Authorities seized over two point six million cartons of cigarettes and other contraband, involving a 28% increase from the previous year. The department is using technology and collaborating with agencies to improve enforcement.
The Excise Department of Thailand projects collecting nearly 2.5 billion baht in fines from cases of smuggling untaxed goods during the 2024 fiscal year, which concluded on September 30.
The number of cases, involving products such as cigarettes, liquor, and motor vehicles, soared to 33,000, marking a 28% increase from the prior fiscal year, as reported by Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul.
Authorities confiscated over 2.6 million cartons of illegally imported cigarettes and 300,000 cartons of untaxed domestic cigarettes.
Additional seized contraband included 147,300 bottles of liquor, 244,723 bottles of perfume, 108,259 liters of beverages, 2.6 million liters of oil, 1,493 motorcycles, and 89,059 batteries.
Mr. Paopoom stated that expected fines from these cases would total approximately 2.46 billion baht.
To enhance enforcement, the department is proactively employing technology and collaborating with various agencies such as the Department of Provincial Administration, Thailand Post, and the military.
