Regional Leaders Grieve the Passing of Former Lao President Khamtai Siphandone
Vietnam announces a period of national mourning as tributes come in from China and Thailand.
The death of former Lao President General Khamtai Siphandone on April 2nd has led to an outpouring of condolences throughout the region, highlighting his contributions to defining Laos' contemporary identity and its international relations. Vietnam has announced a two-day national mourning period from April 4th to 5th, during which flags will be at half-mast and all public festivities will be halted.
Tributes have also been expressed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who praised Khamtai’s commitment to the development of Laos and the friendship between China and Laos. Thai Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra and King Maha Vajiralongkorn commended his legacy in strengthening Laos-Thailand relations, reminiscing about his efforts in welcoming the Thai royal family and nurturing decades of cooperation between the two nations.
Khamtai is remembered for his leadership during Laos' post-war recovery and economic reforms, being honored not just as a national leader, but as a regional statesman whose impact reached well beyond the borders of his country.
