A multi-institutional group of researchers is examining the newly identified Jaeng Suranaree plant for its unique benefits and genetic makeup.
Kanjana Thammanu from Thailand's Ministry of Higher Education's Thai Synchrotron National Lab mentioned their use of synchrotron light to explore the plant's molecular composition.
The team is delving into its genetic properties for precise classification and potential health advantages. Partners include Suranaree University of Technology’s Plant Genetic Conservation Project and other facilities focused on the plant's biology.
Found exclusively in two districts of Nakhon Ratchasima by Suranaree University in 2021, the plant was named to honor the local heroine Thao Suranaree and the university itself.
Using synchrotron IR microspectroscopy, the researchers compared the Jaeng Suranaree and Jaeng Siam plants, discovering higher fat content in the seeds of the former. This data will inform further research into the plant’s applications in medicine or cosmetics.
