Thailand Moves to Shorten Visa-Free Stay to 30 Days in Bid to Strengthen Tourism Integrity

Proposed reform aims to curb misuse while maintaining Thailand’s strong appeal to international visitors
Thailand is preparing to reduce the visa-free stay period for foreign visitors from sixty days to thirty days, in a policy shift designed to reinforce the integrity of its tourism system while maintaining its global attractiveness as a leading destination.

The proposal, led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, follows a review of the current visa exemption scheme, which was expanded in two thousand twenty-four to allow longer stays in order to support tourism recovery.

Officials now believe that the extended sixty-day period may exceed the needs of most travellers, with thirty days considered sufficient for the majority of visits.

Authorities have emphasized that the adjustment is not aimed at limiting tourism, but rather at ensuring that visa-free entry is used strictly for its intended purpose.

The revised framework is expected to close loopholes that have allowed certain individuals to engage in activities outside the scope of short-term travel, including unauthorized work and other non-tourism operations.

Under the proposed system, visitors will still be able to apply for a thirty-day extension through Thailand’s immigration services, allowing a total stay of up to sixty days if required.

This maintains flexibility for genuine tourists while reinforcing oversight mechanisms.

The change is expected to apply to nationals from more than ninety countries currently eligible for visa-free entry.

Importantly, it does not affect travellers who obtain visas in advance or those holding long-term permits, which will continue under existing rules.

Thailand’s government has framed the move as part of a broader strategy to balance openness with security and sustainability.

By refining entry policies, officials aim to protect the country’s tourism sector, support lawful economic activity, and preserve Thailand’s reputation as a welcoming yet well-regulated destination.

The proposal is undergoing final review and is expected to be implemented following formal approval procedures.

As global travel patterns evolve, Thailand continues to demonstrate proactive leadership in adapting its policies to ensure both visitor convenience and national interests remain aligned.
