Thailand Guarantees Safety for Cambodian Team at SEA Games Amid Border Tensions

Thailand Guarantees Safety for Cambodian Team at SEA Games Amid Border Tensions

Bangkok pledges coordinated accommodation and dedicated security for Cambodia’s delegation at the December 9-20 multi-sport event
Thailand has assured Cambodian athletes of their safety during the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian Games, responding to concerns expressed by Phnom Penh over the ongoing border tensions between the two nations.

The Games will run from December 9 to December 20, 2025, across Bangkok, Chon Buri and Songkhla.

According to Chaiyapak Siriwat, Vice-President of Thailand’s National Olympic Committee and Chief Executive Officer of the regional Games’ organising body, Cambodia raised concerns that their delegation of around 300 athletes and officials should be lodged together rather than be assigned separate hotels by sport.

He said Thailand had approved this request and made arrangements to accommodate the team as a single unit in each host city.

Chaiyapak added that dedicated officials would be assigned to oversee the Cambodian delegation’s safety throughout their stay.

Cambodian officials had reportedly found the assurances “very satisfying”.

Additionally, Thailand is also moving ahead with internal reforms to support its own athletes ahead of the Games.

Chaiyapak revealed that the Sports Authority of Thailand and the National Sports Development Fund are working to expedite overdue training allowances since August and to approve increased financial incentives for medal-winning athletes.

A proposal is expected to be finalised by November 20.

Observers view the safety guarantee as critical given the heightened bilateral tensions.

In June and July 2025, border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia resulted in fatalities and regional concern about athlete welfare during the Games.

Thailand’s offer of dedicated lodging and oversight for Cambodia’s team is seen as a pragmatic step to insulate sport from diplomatic friction, preserve regional unity and safeguard the biennial Games’ integrity.

The hosting of the SEA Games offers Thailand an opportunity to demonstrate capable leadership, both in logistics and regional cooperation, at a moment when Southeast Asia is closely watching the kingdom’s handling of security and diplomacy across multiple fronts.

With Cambodia’s participation secured, the Games now enter the final preparation phase, and attention shifts to operational readiness, athlete welfare and the smooth delivery of competition across the three host provinces.
