Thailand Initiates Nationwide Effort to Establish 1,500 Digital Classrooms
Announced by the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry, these classrooms will provide crucial tools, including computers and coding software, for student education.
DES Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong emphasized the program's importance, called "Coding for Better Life," in preparing the nation for a digital economy future. He pointed out that Thailand needs 100,000 digital experts each year, but only 25,000 are currently produced by education systems.
The minister discussed a short-term proposal under review by the Cabinet to introduce a Global Digital Talent Visa for attracting digitally skilled short-term residents.
In the long run, the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) focuses on enhancing digital knowledge for all Thais, with these coding classrooms being key.
depa's president/CEO, Nuttapon Nimmanpatcharin, mentioned specialized programming courses for students under the same program. The initiative also includes training for 3,000 teachers in coding across basic to advanced levels. So far, 700 schools are participating, with an aim to reach the 1,500 target next year.
Moreover, an international coding contest with over 1 million baht in prizes is being organized by the agency to encourage coding among Thai youth.
Nuttapon expressed hope that the program will increase coding awareness and engagement among communities. This effort by the DES Ministry and its partners seeks to build a digitally competent workforce to meet market needs and enhance Thailand's economic prospects.
